Fuel Conversion
Updated over a week ago

If you are modeling a home that uses multiple types of fuel, it will be necessary to convert and combine the fuel usages.

When using combined fuels, it will be necessary to use the simple entry utility bill option, this allows you to enter alternative fuels without having to combine delivery dates.

Use the chart below to convert the fuels.

Example 1: Propane to Fuel Oil

Homeowner is using fuel oil for the heating system, but uses propane for the hot water heater.

Convert the propane to fuel oil, and put the combined total in the simple entry utility bills.

1 gallon of propane to gallons of fuel oil
91,330 / 140,000 = .652 gallons of fuel oil
40 gallons of propane: 40 x .652 = 26.08 gallons of fuel oil

Equivalent fuel oil from propane: 26 gallons
Original fuel use from heating: 1127 gallons
Total fuel oil to enter: 11153 gallons

Example 2: Wood to Fuel Oil

Homeowners have electric baseboard heat, which is supplemented by a wood stove, and no other fuel is used.

Enter the electric bills (as stated) but use simple entry.

Then add the equivalent cords of wood as fuel oil in gallons using simple entry.

1 cord of wood to gallons of fuel oil
20,000,000 / 140,000 = 142.86 gallons of fuel oil
3 cords of wood: 3 x 142.86 = 428.58 gallons of fuel oil
Enter 429 gallons of fuel oil in the primary heating fuel section.

Example 3: Wood to Propane

1 cord of wood to gallons of propane
20,000,000 / 91,330 = 218.99 gallons of propane
3 cords of wood: 3 x 218.99 = 656.97 gallons of propane
Enter or add 657 gallons to primary heating fuel

Example 4: Wood to Natural Gas

Converting natural gas takes an additional step, Snugg Pro requires an input of dollars instead of gallons. You must have the current $ rate available to finish the conversion to dollars. It depends on how the gas bills are calculated - see the 3 choices in the chart above.

1 cord of wood to therms of natural gas
20,000,000 / 100,000 = 200 therms
3 cords of wood: 3 x 200 = 600 therms of natural gas
Calculate the cost of 600 therms.
