Default U-Values

U-factor is the rate at which a window, door, or skylight conducts non-solar heat flow.


The lower the U-factor, the more energy-efficient it is.

Once you select the types of doors on the input screen and model the job, the system gives each door a default U-Value.

You should also be able to use this chart for the improved values. For example, if the existing door is a standard wood door with no glass it has a u-value of 0.46. If you upgrade that door to a ½-Lite Steel, insulated, the improved u-value would be 0.26.

Door Size
The default size of doors is 6 ft 8 inches by 3 ft- or approximately 21sqft. If the home has larger doors, or double doors, the AREA should be edited.

Multiple Doors
Our system allows for 4 doors to be modeled. For larger homes with more than 4 exterior doors, you could double the square footage of the doors.

Doors or Windows?
If you have exterior doors that are more than half glass, or patio doors - you should add it to the windows section instead of the door section.


The U-Value of doors might vary from one manufacturer to another. The chart above gives standard values. Each new door should have an Energy Performance Rating label.
